Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) will press ahead with its strategies to upgrade street lighting systems across the kingdom.

The move is part of efforts to promote energy conservation and sustainability and reduce gas emissions resulting from electrical energy consumption, said EWA chief executive Shaikh Nawaf bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa.

The project aims to improve pedestrian safety and develop clean, renewable energy applications, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

A study is underway to implement pilot projects to this effect, Shaikh Nawaf said.

HPS (high pressure sodium) lighting system was replaced with high quality energy-saving LED lamps on Road 2431 in Juffair last year, on a trial basis.

This helped improve lighting quality and visibility and save electrical energy by 25 per cent, he pointed out.

A solar PV (photovoltaic) street lighting system was also installed in Hidd (Road 901) last year.
