More talks needed on Iran-Oman gas link

MUSCAT, April 3, 2015

More talks are needed to make progress on a deal signed in 2013, after years of talks, for Oman to import gas from Iran via a planned subsea Gulf pipeline link, Omani Foreign Minister Yussef bin Alawi told Reuters on Thursday.

The deal is for an average 20 million cu m per day (mcm/d) of gas over 25 years, in a deal valued at around $60 billion.

Oman has been pressured in the past by the United States to buy fuel from alternative suppliers such as Qatar, according to US embassy cables released by Wikileaks.

"Of course, discussion is taking place in light of our need for more gas for our own industry and power generation. But also we are aware of the sanctions placed on the Iranians," bin Alawi said, referring to international curbs on trade with Iran over its disputed nuclear programme.

"It will take time, but definitely if the whole thing is smooth we would require (investment) in that," he added.

Failure to achieve a deal on Iran's disputed nuclear programme would mean "catastrophe" for the region, the foreign minister told Reuters, but an agreement would bring peace despite lingering political disagreements. - Reuters
