Dr Jawahery....2nd Arab to take role in IFA's 83-year history

GPIC executive to head top fertiliser association

MANAMA, May 28, 2015

GPIC president Dr Abdulrahman Jawahery has been named president of the International Fertiliser Industry Association (IFA).

He is the second Arab to take the role in the 83-year history of the IFA, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

The late Petrochemical Industries Company of Kuwait chairman Dr Abdel Baqi Al Nuri was the first Arab to head the organisation in 1985.

IFA is a non-profit organisation that represents the global fertiliser industry.

It deals on issues related to the promotion of plant nutrients, improvement of the operating environment of member companies and the collection and compilation of industry information.

IFA members serve farmers everywhere as they meet the world's growing food, feed, fibre and bioenergy needs in a sustainable manner.

Dr Jawahery was IFA's vice-president as well as a member of its executive body and a technical committee head from 2006 up to 2009.

He was also the Finance Committee chairman from 2011 to 2013.

Suited for the role, he holds a doctorate in engineering, a master's degree in chemical engineering and is a fellow member of the British Institute of Chemical Engineers.

"It was a statement demonstrating IFA's confidence in the advancement of the petrochemical industry in the Arab world in general and the Gulf region in particular," said Dr Jawahery in a statement.

"It reflects the global confidence in Arab leadership cadres and their competence in handling specialised positions at international institutions.

"The appointment would increase the multifarious responsibilities placed on GPIC and all its employees to enhance sustainability, not only in Bahrain, but on a global scale," he added.

He stressed this was an honour and appreciation of the outstanding success achieved by GPIC within the petrochemical industry, as well as an honour for Bahrain and its citizens.

Dr Jawahery pledged to continue working with his colleagues at IFA to further develop the work systems and developing new innovative ideas as well as create successful sustainable programmes.

Since taking over the GPIC presidency, Dr Jawahery focused on the application of safety standards in all operation, production and export stages as well as on the training and development programmes.

IFA is one of the largest unions concerned with fertilisers and has a membership of 540 companies worldwide. - TradeArabia News Service
