Oil industry to discuss skilled workforce demand challenges

LONDON, July 29, 2015

Despite the low oil price - on the rigs, construction sites and refineries the demand for a highly skilled technical workforce remains, alongside the rigorous training that ensures competency, safety and project efficiency.

In the US, the downstream industry is thriving with a huge number of craft skilled workers needed to build and man new projects, while in Mexico, 135,000 skilled workers will be needed in the coming years to meet the requirements of the ‘Energy Reform.’

The key to the success of these projects, as across the Americas, will be the effective partnerships built between industry and the colleges and training providers that will source and train talent to meet the skills and workforce development needs of industry.

Getenergy’s third VTEC Americas event is set to return to Lone Star College, The Woodlands, Houston on from October 13 to 15, directly following the Mexico National Workshop hosted by UNAM in Mexico City on October 12.

It will bring together key oil and gas industry and education stakeholders from the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and the whole of the Americas.

It will focus on the advancement of vocational and technical training and education initiatives, showcasing important case studies and sharing challenges among this community of best practice.

The discussions will centre on key themes including workforce planning; health, safety and environment; deepwater offshore drilling; and education partnerships.

VTEC Americas will also include the ‘Learning Arena,’ an exhibition of 51 education and training specialists, exposing colleges and polytechnics to a community of leading training providers and opening up networks, partnerships and collaborative pathways with major oil and gas operators and service providers.

Meanwhile, the Mexican Energy Reform presents huge opportunity for the development of existing fields and new discoveries, but the success of which, Getenergy believes, will be determined by the means in which Mexican people benefit through employment, entrepreneurship and prosperity underpinned by education and training.

The Mexico National Workshop aims are twofold - firstly, to help map education provision currently and bridge the gap between Mexican oil industry and education system.

The second is to support international education and training providers better understand and access the huge opportunities in Mexico. - TradeArabia News Service
