Al Tayer ... work to be completed by November next year.

Dubai solar park substation on track

DUBAI, September 14, 2015

The substation project at Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai, UAE, is progressing well with about 30 per cent of engineering work completed, said Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa).

The 400/132 kV substation, being built at a cost of Dh250 million ($68 million), has a 505 MVA transmission capacity.

The project includes supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the substation, which is due to be completed by November next year, said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of Dewa.

Al Tayer pointed that the substation will connect the solar power generated from the 200 MW second phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, to Dewa’s grid to supply Dubai with electricity.

In the future, other phases of the Solar Park will be connected to the station to power new development projects in Dubai, he added.

Al Tayer said as part of future expansions, another substation with the same capacity will be built to transmit the solar energy of the Solar Park, which is expected to reach a capacity of 3,000 MW by 2030.

Swiss engineering firm ABB is building the project for which Energo is the consultant. ABB is working with a number of companies on the project, including Commodore.

The substation features the latest digital substation technologies to serve Dubai’s ambitious development and economic plans, Dewa said.

It has three sections with the first housing a 400 kV substation and 11 gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), while the second includes a 132 kV substation that has 21 GIS and the third section is the control building.

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is one of the largest strategic independent power producer (IPP) projects worldwide in renewable energy with a planned 1,000 MW production capacity by 2020 and 3,000MW by 2030.

The project supports the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 developed by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy to diversify the energy mix in the emirate, said Dewa in its statement.

"Solar energy will account for seven per cent of the total energy production by 2020 and 15 per cent by 2030, it stated.

The project, which occupies 4.5 sq km, will help achieve a reduction of approximately 400,000 tonnes of carbon emissions by 2020, and support the green initiatives and programmes implemented by the Government of Dubai to reduce carbon emissions, the statement added.-TradeArabia News Service
