Iran planning to increase gas exports

Iran may export LNG to Iraq, Oman

IRAN, December 3, 2015

Iran has received a request for the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Iraq, and final negotiations with Oman are underway to sign a contract to supply gas from Jask terminal in southern Iran, a senior official said in a report.

Iran has a new plan to increase gas exports, Hamidreza Araqi, deputy oil minister, was quoted as saying in an Iran Daily report, citing Mehr News Agency.

He pointed to the formation of a 48-inch split from the Peace Pipeline to Jask terminal, and said that after the construction of land pipelines, the remaining route will be created in the Gulf for the transfer of gas to Oman.

Araqi, who is also the managing director of National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), underlined that the company has been put in charge of constructing the overland pipeline and gas transfer to the Arabian country will begin once a final agreement is reached and the contract signed, said the report.

Speaking about Iraq's recent request to import gas from Iran in the form of LNG, he added that it is possible to transfer LNG to Basra via the sea route thus making it possible to export gas to Iraq both through pipeline and as LNG.

Araqi announced that the export of natural gas from Iran to Iraq will start within three months and currently, the construction of pipelines and facilities to deliver gas to Iraq have become operational.

The deputy minister maintained that gas exports to Iraq will be seven million cubic meters per day (mcm/d) in the first stage and this figure will eventually reach 25 mcm/d, added the report.
