Solar puzzle in Spain

, August 14, 2013

Workers remove solar panels from the roof of a building where Spanish ecological architect Inaki Alonso has his home in Madrid. Two weeks after Spain's conservative government unveiled a sweeping energy reform with levies on green energy, Alonso hired two men to take down the roof-top solar panels he had put up six months earlier. Calculating the cost of using solar panels after a new government levy that will make it more expensive to generate your own energy, Alonso - an ecological architect - said the numbers did not add up. And by keeping the panels without connecting them to the electricity grid as mandated in a new energy law, Alonso faced a government fine of between 6 million and 30 million euros ($8 million-$40 million).
