Ukrainian riot police fight protesters occupying the central Independence Square in Kiev early on Wednesday after the bloodiest day since the former Soviet republic won its independence. At least 14 protesters and seven policemen have been killed in violence that erupted on Tuesday. Demonstrators have managed to find protection behind a burning barricade of tyres and wood.
