Dubai gold jewellery sales up 30pc

Dubai, February 8, 2011

Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group (DGJG) has reported a 30 per cent growth in sales in the first two weeks of its ‘Bag of Fortune’ campaign from participating jewellery retail outlets in the emirate.

During the first two weeks of the festival, the DGJG gave away seven kilos of gold in raffle draws to residents and tourists of various nationalities.

The ‘Bag of Fortune’ campaign is being held in association with the World Gold Council (WGC), said a statement from DGJG.

The key sponsors of the campaign include Damas Jewellery, Joy Alukkas Jewellery, Atlas Jewellery, Chittillappilly Jewellers, Malabar Gold, Meena Jewellers, and Sky Jewellery, it added.

Anan Fakhreddin, DGJG chairman and board director said, 'The healthy sales increase is a testimony to the success and popularity of our DSF campaign which has invigorated the gold and jewellery trade. Retailers have reported more footfall and an increase in the number of tourists visiting their shops.'

'The fact that gold prices have fallen in the last week has also intensified consumer interest in the precious metal, with many using the opportunity to buy more gold and jewellery,' he pointed out.

'And with daily chances to win half a kilo of gold, instant cash prizes and a bumper five kilos of gold at the end of the festival, this is the perfect time to indulge in more sparkle,' he added.

Ajay Mitra, managing director for Middle East and Turkey, WGC, said it has been a good start for gold at this year’s Dubai Shopping Festival.

'We have seen evidence of increased tourist footfall, with interest in both the 22kt and 18kt segments. There has also been real enthusiasm for the ‘Bag of Fortune’ campaign, with both residents and tourists alike keen to try and win gold prizes every day. We're looking forward to the last two exciting weeks of the festival.'

The campaign will run till February 20 at all participating jewellery outlets. To take part in the raffle draws, customers need to spend up to Dh500 ($136) on jewellery purchases.

In addition to the kilos of gold on offer, there is also an opportunity for shoppers of diamonds, pearls and watches to win a total of Dh3 million through a special ‘Scratch n Win’ promotion for instant cash prizes, said Mitra.

Anyone spending up to Dh1,000 on diamond jewellery, pearls or watches is entitled to one ‘Scratch n Win’ coupon along with two gold and jewellery raffle promotion coupons, thus doubling their chances.-TradeArabia News Service
