Henkel listed in companies leading in sustainability

DUBAI, November 4, 2014

Henkel, a leading manufacturer of consumer goods and adhesives technologies, has been listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI World) and Dow Jones Sustainability Index Europe (DJSI Europe) for the eighth consecutive year.

The Germany-based consumer goods player emphasised that it continues to be the only company in its sector to feature in both of the indices, which include the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide, said a statement.

S&P Dow Jones Indices and the Swiss agency RobecoSAM revealed the results of their 2014 sustainability assessments recently.

A thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance was carried out in order to establish the DJSI rankings, evaluating areas such as corporate governance, resource efficiency and supply chain standards.

Only 10 per cent of the world's 2,500 largest corporations made the grade for selection in the DJSI World, while only 20 per cent of the 600 largest European corporations make it to the DJSI Europe.

Kathrin Menges, executive vice president - HR and chair of Henkel’s Sustainability Council, said: “Building on our experience, we are pioneering new solutions that will drive sustainable development while continuing to grow our business successfully. The results of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and other global ratings confirm that we are on the right track to implement our ambitious sustainability strategy.”

Henkel is steadfast on sustainability and its efforts in the Gulf and Middle East are centered towards driving health and safety, enhancing employee well-being, reducing environmental impact and contributing to community development.

The company has carved a niche in sustainability across the region with a number of initiatives to reinforce its sustainability mission across Gulf and Middle East, including sustainability awareness campaigns among the community, educating about the perils to the environment and raising awareness about recycling plastic, paper and metals.

One of Henkel’s sustainability programmes implemented in the GCC, is the Schools Education Program. It is designed designed to educate children at a younger age on how small changes in their lifestyle can make a huge impact on the environment for a better tomorrow.

Another successful endeavour as a part of Henkel’s sustainability drive was the TapOut project for Jordina, a leading producer of cakes and biscuits in Amman, Jordan.

The project was implemented by GCC’s Adhesive Technologies Packaging and Consumer Goods Business Unit (AI). The carton closing system using Technomelt bonding products sealed the top and bottom of the carton through an automated process. This new method helped reduce the use of landfill by 81 per cent, saving both adhesive and tape waste and is expected to save customers 650 hours every month, leading to more efficient production overall. - TradeArabia News Service
