Specsaddict offers free insurance for kids

DUBAI, April 7, 2016

Specsaddict.com, an eyewear platform, has launched a complimentary kids insurance campaign on all spectacles for school children in the UAE, to help ease the burden of keeping eyeglasses in tact.

If a child looses or breaks their eyeglasses in school and their parents notify specsaddict that evening, a new pair of glasses will be on their doorstep before they go to school the next day, said a statement.

The platform also offers everyone a free trial, it said.

D J Sengupta, founder of specsaddict.com, said: “The cost of repairing or replacing glasses is an unwanted expense for most parents.

“This initiative, specially created with kids in mind, offers free insurance on all children’s eyeglasses, as well as next day delivery. This is an amazing service, and a first for the UAE.

“We’re also excited about the technology behind our offering, which allows children to try on their glasses before they select them using our virtual mirror.”

The virtual glasses try-on tool, found in the site’s shopping cart, will enable children across the UAE to try on a range of eyeglasses before they select them using their parent’s (or their own) iPhone, iPad or laptop.

Alongside free insurance, specsaddict is also offering at home free eye testing using market-leading technology from MIT and its spinout EyeNetra.

Meanwhile, the newly launched mobile eye-test device called Netra, is a binocular-like headset. Users attach a smartphone to the front and peer through the headset at the phone’s display. Patterns, such as separate red and green lines or circles, appear on the screen.

The user turns a dial to align the patterns and pushes a button to lock them in place. After eight interactions, the app calculates the difference between what the user sees as “aligned” and the actual alignment of the patterns. This signals any refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

The app then displays the refractive powers, axis of astigmatism, and pupillary distance required for eyeglasses prescriptions.

“Technology is a huge component of our overall business model. Introducing this pioneering technology to the UAE is something we are incredibly proud of. It is also a stellar example of the forward-thinking approach that the entire team at specsaddict has adopted as it continues to provide an innovative, personable service to eyewear consumers in the UAE,” Sengupta added. - TradeArabia News Service
