Balls of fire

, September 2, 2012

A participant walks past a fireball during the traditional "Bolas de Fuego" (Balls of Fire) festival early morning in Nejapa, about 12 km (7.5 miles) north of San Salvador, September 1. The festival involves throwing fireballs made of rags, tied up with wire and soaked in diesel fuel. Residents celebrate the tradition dedicated to Saint Geronimo, who fought the devil with fireballs, and to commemorate the eruption of San Salvador's El Playon volcano in 1658 which destroyed the first settlement in the village.
