Qatar Airways plane in emergency landing

Beijing, February 5, 2009

A Qatar Airway flight from Japan to Qatar made an emergency landing at an airport in northwest China on Thursday, according to a Xinhua report.
All 194 people aboard are safe, the report said.

The plane, QR821, flying from Osaka to Doha encountered mechanical problems at about 6:35 am above Urumqi, the regional capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

It plunged from a height of 11,000 m to 2,000 m in just five minutes, forcing the crew to prepare for landing at 7:22 am at the airport of Kashi city, according to the airport administration.

On board were 20 crew members and 174 passengers from 22 countries and regions including Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United States and Qatar.

The passengers were sent to nearby hotels.  Qatar Airways is sending another plane to transport the passengers, it said.
