Bahrain hotels hit by demonstrations

Manama, February 17, 2011

Hotel bookings across Bahrain have been hit by anti-government protests.

As street protests entered their fourth day yesterday, hoteliers reported 'some cancellations', but said the situation was not alarming.

An official at Seef's Mercure Grand Hotel admitted it had suffered as a result of the demonstrations.

'Most of our guests are from Saudi Arabia who come to Bahrain with their families and they have not turned up,' she said.

'We hope they will soon return because if this continues, we will begin to get worried.'

However, an official at L'Hotel, Bahrain's only boutique hotel, said there had been no impact.

'We are not facing any cancellations and all is well,' he said.

'We are very well-booked for the next few days as well.'

A Gulf Hotel official said there had been 'some impact', but refused to elaborate.

Meanwhile, an Interior Ministry official said traffic across Bahrain returned to normal yesterday.

'There were some disruptions over the last two days but all roads and thoroughfares are now open,' he said.

The British Foreign Office advised people to be aware of sporadic demonstrations and outbreaks of violence in several parts of the country, which continue at 'low level.'

All British citizens have been asked to maintain a high level of security awareness, particularly in public areas and on major highways.

They are also asked to avoid large gatherings, crowds and demonstrations since a number of them turned violent.-TradeArabia News Service
