Oman...focusing on the aviation sector

Oman plans low-cost carrier; to invite bids

MUSCAT, February 9, 2015

Oman plans to invite bids from investors interested in the setting up of a low-cost carrier based in the sultanate by April.

Bidders can be private parties or a combination of public and private entities, said a report in Oman Tribune quoting Dr Mohammed Bin Nasser Al Zaabi, CEO of Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA).

The best qualified bidder will be awarded licence for low cost carrier operations post the prequalification process of the request.

Moreover, PACA will introduce an air transport policy this year for the sector’s functioning as only a civil aviation law is presently governing the sector, the report said.

Work to upgrade the old southern runway of the Muscat International Airport to the latest standards will begin in March and will continue for a year. The upgraded runway, like the northern runway will be 4 km long and 75 m wide. This year will also see a series of systems getting integrated and operational.

The ‘Early Warning Centre’ at the new Air Traffic Control tower, which encompasses metrological and air navigation services will become operational on March 23. In Salalah, the new airport is expected to open by June, while construction work for Duqm airport terminal and infrastructure will start very soon, it said.
