Award-winning Sergio Mendes to perform at the festival

Abu Dhabi Festival to kick off on March 3

ABU DHABI, March 2, 2015

The 12th edition of Abu Dhabi Festival, a leading cultural event in the Arabian Gulf, officially starts tomorrow (March 3), bringing to the UAE a spectacular month-long programme of concerts, performances and workshops.

Organised by the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF), this year’s theme is “Idea: The Seed of Invention”.

Hoda Ibrahim Al Khamis-Kanoo, founder of ADMAF and the Abu Dhabi Festival, said: “This year’s theme perfectly encapsulates the vision of Abu Dhabi Festival and highlights the arts education and community arts initiatives that are at its heart. By creating a programme that brings together the best of the arts from all over the world, we hope to nurture the development of national talent and ensure that artistic expression and creativity of all forms are embedded as key components in our society.” 

Bringing the best in international and regional opera, theatre, music and visual arts to the Emirates each year, highlights from this year’s main programme include:  Othello: The Remix by the Chicago Shakespeare Theater (March 5); Sergio Mendes: Beats from Brazil (March 20); A Night at The Opera: Juan Diego Flórez & the Budapest Festival Orchestra conducted by Gábor Takács-Nagy (March 23); Beethoven Violin Concerto: Riccardo Muti conducts Anne-Sophie Mutter & the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra (March 25); Piano Masterpieces Leif Ove Andsnes and the Budapest Festival Orchestra Conducted By Iván Fischer (March 26);  Mozart’s The Magic Flute Opera production directed and conducted by Iván Fischer with the Budapest Festival Orchestra (March 30); When Music Matters: Mayssa Karaa (April 2); and View From Inside: Contemporary Arab Photography; Video and Mixed Media Art  and Emirati Insights (March 21 – April 20).

This year’s edition also introduces for the first time ‘The Festival Recital Series’ as part of the main programme, bringing talented young role models of classical music to the UAE for a series of inspiring recitals and workshops. Performances include; Jan Lisiecki in Recital (March 24); Ah Ruem Ahn, Piano (March 3); and Aisha Syed Castro, Violin (March 17). 

Placing the community at its heart, the festival once again offers a range of creative learning experiences for people of all ages to enjoy. Live Music Now will offer a two-week series of workshops for children with special needs, officially launching this year’s community and education programme.

With a series of free events hosted at various locations across the emirate, other community and education programme highlights include: Young Musicians’ Concert with Decoda (March 14), Cinema Emirati (March 18 – 19), Ministry of Science Live! Pocket Sized Science (March 21), Sydney Opera House Babies Proms: Meeting Mozart (24 – 26 March), Capital Vibes II (27 – 28 March), and the annual discussion series, Riwaq Al Fikr / The Festival Debates (various dates).
