Ramada Ajman team with Provectus Middle East at the signing ceremony

Ramada's Ajman hotels launch new sustainability project

AJMAN, October 29, 2015

Ramada Hotel & Suites Ajman and Ramada Beach Hotel Ajman have teamed up with sustainable solutions provider Provectus Middle East to launch an initiative to collect used cooking oil and convert them into biodiesel.

Alongside their other environmental projects, the hotels aim to step up its green practices and further sustainability in the hospitality field through the new initiative.

Iftikhar Hamdani, cluster general manager of the two hotels, signed the contract with Zack H. Abdi, managing director of Provectus Middle East.

Founded on the agreement, Ramada Hotel & Suites Ajman and Ramada Beach Hotel Ajman will provide access to Provectus to collect cooking oil waste generated from the hotels’ kitchen, restaurants and staff accommodation, which will then be processed to 100 per cent biodegradable biodiesel.

Commenting on the new initiative, Hamdani said: “We are very privileged to collaborate with Provectus in rolling out this new scheme to both our properties. Sustainable activities in our sector are highly essential and we encourage our fellow hoteliers and other industry professionals to intensify their campaigns toward sustainable tourism. The two properties generate 4,350 gallons of cooking oil waste in a year and through this, we can produce clean diesel and cut down on carbon dioxide emission, from materials which are initially considered as waste.”

Provectus is a privately-owned company which specialises in environmental, alternative energy and IT solutions, servicing various industries. Sharing the same vision on the partnership, Abdi said: “Our advocacy on sustainable future through eco-friendly solutions and practices are very much in line with these two hotels. Using alternative sources of energy such as the biodiesel is better for our health and our environment and our team is looking forward to tap more organisations, especially in the tourism and hospitality sector to join our cause so we can create more positive results and bigger impact. Recent mandates from leadership indicate 20 per cent reduction in consumption of energy and water as part of environmental solutions. Hotels like Ramada Hotel & Suites Ajman and Ramada Beach Hotel Ajman are playing pivotal role in bringing awareness and sustainable solutions to all stakeholders.”

The hotels already have sustainability projects running. “Three years after the launch of our initiative zero landfill project, we are able to divert approximately 985,500 kg of waste from the landfill, which are mainly food waste from the kitchen turned into compost. The cooking oil to biodiesel initiative will further reduce our landfill submission, which is already at 10%, and we will continue to look for ways to reach zero percent,” Hamdani said. – TradeArabia News Service
