ME carriers lead air travel demand growth

GENEVA, October 6, 2016

Middle East carriers reported a staggering 10.3 per cent rise in global air travel demand in August, which was the largest increase among all the regions.

According to a report released by The International Air Transport Association (Iata), airlines in all the regions recorded growth, with the Middle East taking the lead. Following closely behind Latin American airlines (6.7 per cent), Asia-Pacific airlines (5.6 per cent) and European carriers (3.3 per cent), with North American and African airlines closing the list at 1.8 per cent.

The Middle East also recorded a capacity increase of 13.7 per cent, resulting in a 2.5 percentage point fall in load factor to 81.2 per cent.

Globally, international passenger demand rose 4.7 per cent compared to August 2015. Capacity climbed 6.5 per cent, causing load factor to slide 1.4 percentage points to 83.9 per cent.

Demand for domestic travel also climbed 4.3 per cent in August compared to same month in 2015, which was slightly exceeded by a 4.4 per cent increase in capacity. Load factor slid 0.1 percentage points to 83.6 per cent. All markets reported demand increases with the exception of Brazil and Russia, with India and China reporting double-digit rises.

“Growth in passenger demand dipped to 4.6 per cent. While that’s disappointing compared to the previous month’s performance, it is still healthy growth. And although terrorist attacks in Europe have dampened demand, the impact is ebbing,” said Alexandre de Juniac, Iata’s director general and CEO. -  TradeArabia News Service
