Meliá Koh Samui awarded Thai safety certification

KOH SAMUI, Thailand, August 4, 2020

Meliá Koh Samui has been granted the Thai government’s new ‘Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration (SHA)’ certificate, recognising the resort’s health, safety and hygiene measures aimed at preventing the spread of the pandemic.

The first Meliá property launched in Thailand, the 159-room and 41-suite luxury resort overlooking Choeng Mon Beach on Koh Samui’s north-eastern coastline has been awarded the SHA certificate by the Tourism Authority of Thailand after meeting all required safety, sanitation and social distancing standards.

Developed by Thailand’s Ministry for Tourism in collaboration with public and private sector partners, the SHA certification scheme aims to elevate the country’s tourism industry standards and boost confidence in the hard-hit hospitality sector. SHA certification also makes tourism an integral part of Thailand’s overall Covid-19 prevention strategy.

“It’s crucial we throw our full support behind this initiative to not only help Thailand’s tourism industry take steps towards its recovery from the pandemic but, most importantly, to keep guests, staff and the community safe and healthy,” Melia Koh Samui’s general manager Ernesto Osuna said.

The resort is also part of a separate global programme called “Stay Safe With Meliá” developed in collaboration with certification, inspection and testing company Bureau Veritas.

The “360 degree” programme entails a strict cleaning and disinfection plan endorsed by supplier Diversey and uses technological solutions to minimize physical contact between guests and staff. The programme also has occupational health measures to identify people at risk and management of possible cases of infection, post-Covid-19 standards to ensure the safety of food and beverage, wellness, entertainment and in-room experiences and operational guides targeting staff procedures, training and maintenance of facilities.

In addition to Bureau Veritas auditing Meliá Hotels International’s management of the preventative measures to combat Covid-19, Meliá Koh Samui has also appointed a person responsible for the emotional wellbeing of guests and to verify compliance with the programme.

Meliá Koh Samui celebrated its grand opening on January 10 this year, unveiling world-class facilities including two restaurants, a swim-up bar, a lagoon pool that “loops” through its grounds like a river, a two-level infinity pool, an executive lounge, spa, fitness centre, ballroom and conference facilities and, for families, a kid’s club, outdoor playground and mini water park. – TradeArabia News Service
