Bahrain 'to be Gulf's cultural pearl'
Manama:

Bahrain Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa last night paid tribute to Bahrain's rich heritage and the spirit of hoping to become the cultural pearl of the Gulf.

HRH The Crown Prince was speaking as he officially opened 'Manama, Capital of Arab Culture 2012'.

The ceremony, at Bahrain National Museum, was held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad, who deputised HRH the Crown Prince.

He expressed pride at Manama being named the capital of Arab culture, which he said reflects Bahrain's cultural and historical importance, and its people's modern outlook over centuries.

He praised a special musical production 'Path of Pearls' that brought to life the kingdom's proud pearling heritage, and thanked Culture Minister Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa and ministry staff for its success.

He also thanked dignitaries and officials from GCC and Arab countries for attending the event.

Renowned Egyptian musician Selim Sahab's Arab Music Ensemble and the Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra were the highlights of the musical extravaganza, which weaved Bahrain's cultural history with modern day life. Famous singer Hind was among the local artists taking part.

Shaikha Mai thanked the leadership for their support in revitalising culture and heritage. She also stressed the importance of the event in reflecting the modern reality Bahrain enjoys and embedding with it the spirit of love and peace through art and culture.

Shaikha Mai also highlighted efforts to promote Manama as the capital of Arab culture.-TradeArabia News Service
