VISA REQUIREMENTS
  Visas are required by all visitors except the citizens of France and Italy.
On arrival, you will be required to fill out a currency and valuables declaration form and you must report to the police at your first large town.
Going to Mali, you will pass through a checkpoint and there are a number of checks if you are travelling south to Nouadhibou.
   

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
  A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travellers arriving from infected areas. Precautions are advised against cholera, typhoid and polio. There is a malaria risk throughout the year except in the northern areas.
   

CUSTOM REGULATIONS
  200 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 450g tobacco,
1 bottle of spirits; 50g perfume.
   

CURRENCY
  1 Mauritanian Ouguiya (MRO) = 5 khoums
   

EXCHANGE RATE
  US$1 = MRO271.3 (June 2006)
   

CURRENCY REGULATIONS
  No restriction on the import of foreign currency provided it is declared on arrival. The balance of foreign currency imported but not spent may be exported on production of the import declaration form. The import and export of local currency is prohibited. Visitors are advised to check in advance with credit card companies to ascertain card acceptability in Mauritania.
