SEC to implement smart meter project in February

Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) plans to launch the first phase of the smart metering project in early February.

SEC recently signed SR9.5 billion ($2.53 billion) worth of contracts for the comprehensive project, with a plan to install 10 million smart meters before the end of March 2023.

About 3.5 million meters will be purchased from local manufacturers and one third of the project’s value will be sourced from local content, SEC said.

In the second phase, the meters will be linked to telecom systems, before being linked to the billing systems in the third and final stage.

Users will not bear any costs for implementing the project, SEC said. The project will be funded through the company’s internal resources in addition to external financing.

Etihad Etisalat Company (Mobily) and Al- Fanar Construction consortium will implement the project in Central and Eastern operating areas and a branch of China Electric Power Equipment and Technology (SGCC) will implement the project in Western and Southern operating areas.
