UAE Space Agency, South Australia sign cooperation deal

The UAE Space Agency signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of South Australia to set up a framework for joint cooperation in the exploration and utilisation of outer space and the exchange of information, expertise, scientific research and space technology.

The official signing ceremony took place at the Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi, said a statement.

The agreement was signed by Dr Eng Mohammed Nasser Al Ahbabi, director general of the UAE Space Agency and retired Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston, chairman of the Defence South Australia Advisory Board, it said.

The memorandum sets out the framework for future cooperation between both parties in the promotion of international cooperation in space sciences, technologies and applications for sustainable development and specialised capacity building, it added.

It also includes a framework for the exchange of information and experience and joint research and development. Finally, the MoU also establishes channels for academic exchanges and industrial cooperation in the exploration of outer space.

Al Ahbabi said: “This agreement complements the UAE Space Agency’s efforts in enhancing cooperation with various countries and international space organisations in order to promote the growth of our national space sector through scientific, technical and specialised expertise in various space fields.”

“The Australian space sector is one of the most advanced sectors in the world. Cooperation is key for the global space industry, and this MoU will contribute to the improvement of the capabilities of both parties through joint projects and initiatives,” he added.

The UAE Space Agency has signed more than 25 MoUs and cooperation agreements with major global and regional players in the space sector. Additionally, it has signed joint cooperation agreements in space policy, legislation, space science, technology and applications.
