The US largest clean energy infrastructure project, the $11 billion SunZia wind farm and transmission line in New Mexico, is now fully operational after nearly two decades of development, its owner Pattern Energy Group said.

SunZia is a 3,650 MW wind farm paired with a 550-mile transmission line that will deliver electricity from central New Mexico to Arizona, with around two-thirds of the power ultimately flowing to California.

The project is expected to supply enough electricity for about 1 million homes and is roughly three times larger than the next biggest US wind farms.

First proposed in 2008, SunZia faced years of permitting delays before construction began in 2023.

Its completion comes as federal policy under President Donald Trump has slowed renewable energy approvals while emphasising fossil fuels.

Company officials called the project a milestone for meeting rising US electricity demand, while lawmakers highlighted the need for faster permitting reform to support future large-scale energy projects. -OGN/TradeArabia News Service
