Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company– Masdar has signed two strategic agreements with European energy partners, strengthening its investment presence in Germany and supporting Europe’s energy transition, energy security and growing electricity needs.
The agreements, signed during UAE President Sheikh Mohamed
bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s state visit to Germany, cover offshore wind and battery
energy storage, highlighting Masdar’s plans to expand its European clean energy
platform through long-term investment and partnerships.
Masdar and RWE signed a Memorandum of Understanding to
explore joint participation in future German offshore wind auctions, with an
indicative investment value exceeding €3 billion ($3.5 billion).
The agreement builds on an established partnership between
the two companies, which already includes major offshore wind projects in the
UK.
Separately, Masdar signed an MoU with German energy
infrastructure asset manager Luxcara to establish a strategic partnership
focused on Germany and wider Europe.
The companies will explore investments in battery energy
storage systems, offshore wind and potentially other clean energy technologies,
with a potential combined value exceeding €5 billion.
The agreements underscore the UAE’s growing role as a
strategic investor in Europe’s energy sector while expanding Masdar’s presence
across renewable generation and energy storage.
Masdar already has a significant footprint in Germany,
including the 476MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, which became fully
operational last year.
The project is part of Masdar’s broader European offshore
wind portfolio, alongside the 630MW London Array, Dudgeon, Hywind Scotland and
the 1.4GW East Anglia THREE project.
Masdar and RWE are also co-investors in London Array and are
jointly advancing the 3GW Dogger Bank South offshore wind projects off
England’s northeast coast.
The partnership with Luxcara could further diversify
Masdar’s European platform by combining offshore wind with battery storage.
As renewable generation expands, energy storage is
increasingly important for improving grid flexibility and ensuring clean
electricity can be supplied when demand is high.
Masdar said it has invested more than $13 billion in Europe
and developed a portfolio exceeding 15.6GW across the UK, Germany, Spain,
Portugal and Southeastern and Central Europe.
The company is targeting 100GW of renewable energy capacity
globally by 2030 as it continues to expand in priority markets.
Mohamed Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar, said: “Masdar
has built a strong European business over more than a decade, investing across
offshore wind, onshore renewables and increasingly energy storage. These
agreements represent another important step in that journey and demonstrate our
continued commitment to Germany and Europe as strategic growth markets.”
Al Ramahi added: “Our experience includes developing some of Europe’s most significant offshore wind projects, from London Array and Dogger Bank South in the UK to Baltic Eagle in Germany. We are now building on that foundation by bringing together large-scale renewable generation, storage and world-class partnerships to deliver reliable power and long-term value for the UAE and our partners.” -OGN/TradeArabia News Service
