Saudi Arabia's Roads General Authority (RGA) expanded its initiative to process and reuse building demolition waste in asphalt mixes to Jeddah, Riyadh, and Al Muzahimiyah, following the construction of the world's first road using such material in Al Ahsa Governorate, reported SPA.

The initiative is part of the Authority's efforts to enhance the sustainability of the road sector and improve the quality of the road network through innovative solutions while reducing the environmental impact of roadworks. 

According to RGA, the kingdom generates about 22 million tonnes of construction and demolition waste annually, highlighting the importance of developing practical ways to convert this waste into reusable material for infrastructure projects in accordance with approved technical requirements and standards.

The initiative is part of the Authority's efforts to enhance the sustainability of the road sector and improve the quality of the road network through innovative solutions while reducing the environmental impact of roadworks. 

It also supports the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 related to environmental sustainability and resource efficiency by converting construction waste into material suitable for road projects, stated the report.

The authority affirmed its commitment to adopting modern technologies and expanding initiatives that combine quality, sustainability, and cost efficiency. These efforts support the objectives of the Road Sector Program and the development of a safe and sustainable road network, it added.
