DIC labour village work completed

Dubai, November 3, 2009

Dubai Industrial City, the dedicated light and medium manufacturing destination, has completed construction work on the extension to its first labour village.

The complex is amongst the first in the country to comply with the stringent Ministry of Labour regulations, said a statement.

Currently operational and fully leased out, the labour village features a total of 26 buildings that can accommodate up to 14,000 residents and was planned and designed based on an extensive market and field research that elicited the feedback of over 10,000 workers, it said.

The village is one of the several labour villages planned at the industrial destination to meet demand from companies operating out of Dubai Industrial City, as well as firms with operations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Rashed Al Ansari, vice-president of Dubai Industrial City, said: “As the region’s leading industrial destination, we are proud to be one of the first to provide socially responsible and cost efficient labour accommodation that is compliant with the new federal regulations as well as international health and safety standards. The building of the extension to the current Labour Village has been prompted by the strong demand from companies that aim to reinforce their position as responsible employers and demonstrate their commitment to the welfare of their employees.

“The provision of global health and safety standards are ensured through benchmarking the facilities against the criteria mandated by Maqayees, our integrated management system that ensures the implementation of world class quality, health, safety and environment (QHSE) standards.”

All the rooms at the labour village are air-conditioned and include well-appointed community amenities such as supermarkets, shops, mosque, landscaped walkways and gardens, as well as exclusive parking areas for buses to transport workers. Dedicated playgrounds for football, volleyball, and cricket are also available at the premises and provided with round- the- clock security, the statement said.

Al Ansari added: “The labour accommodation is one of the value added facilities and ancillary services we provide to our investors such as logistics, warehousing, office space and industrial training that are central to our competitive advantage.”

The 560 million sq ft Dubai Industrial City is a comprehensive one-stop, cost-effective industrial and commercial destination. Complementary facilities offered by Dubai Industrial City include 2.8 million sq ft of open storage yards, three million sq ft of warehouses in addition to specialised showrooms, transPARK end-to-end logistics solutions, training programmes by Dubai Industrial Academy, as well as four operational office buildings.

Dubai Industrial City features six dedicated zones for food and beverage, base metal, mineral products, chemicals, transport equipment and parts, as well as machinery and mechanical equipment. – TradeArabia News Service
