Bahrain to get public squares and gardens

Manama, February 10, 2011

Twenty-one public gardens and 50 public squares could be on the way in Bahrain's Central Governorate, which includes Isa Town and surrounding areas.

They are just some of the projects included in the Central Municipal Council's proposed BD25 million budget for this year and next year.

Three new markets are also accounted for in Sitra, Isa Town and Nuwaidrat, as well as five new monuments and three new walkways across the governorate - which is home to 326,305 people.

The budget must first be approved by the Municipal and Urban Planning Affairs Ministry.

However, council services committee head Sadiq Rabea'a warned yesterday that failure to approve it would only cause a build-up of stalled projects over the next two years.

He claimed the council's budget had already gone up since 2009-2010 because of ministry delays in approving council spending.

'That is why the ministry needs to immediately allocate this budget so we can go ahead with stalled projects, instead of the expenses building up,' he told the council during a meeting yesterday at its Isa Town headquarters.

'If projects are stalled due to lack of budget, it will affect the next council and residents.'

The council is seeking two separate budgets that combined are worth BD25 million.

It wants BD10 million to spend over the next two years to develop infrastructure and services across the Central Governorate's nine constituencies.

In addition, it wants BD15 million to pay for new public projects such as parks, markets and monuments.

The 21 public gardens are estimated to cost BD3.8 million, while the three walkways would cost BD1.1 million altogether.

Councillors unanimously approved the proposed budget yesterday before submitting it to the ministry.

However, they inserted a clause that stated no money would be spent unless the two budgets were both approved.-TradeArabia News Service
