1,800 contracting workers in Bahrain end strike

Manama, May 23, 2013

An estimated 1,800 workers who went on strike at Bahrain contracting firm G P Zachariades (GPZ) five days ago, claiming they hadn't been paid for the past two months, returned to work yesterday (May 22).

Labour Ministry officials attended a meeting between them and the company at their Sitra accommodation on Tuesday, during which an agreement was apparently reached, according to the Gulf Daily News.

"We went to the labour camp and had a meeting between the company officials and workers," said Labour Ministry inspections and labour unions director Ahmed Al Haiki.

"The workers complained they hadn't sent any money to their families and were facing problems, as they could not pay for food and other necessities. We explained the situation to the workers and there was an agreement that the company would pay one and a half months salary and the balance would be paid in a couple of days.

"This is a good company, which is developing major new projects in Bahrain. It never delays paying its workers, but had issues receiving money from clients. We urged this company to pay its workers on time, as they have necessities,” he added.

"We also urge other contracting and construction companies to follow the rules and be good to their employees. They can get more work from their employees if they pay them on time, if they need them to work and finish projects on time,” Al Haiki concluded. – TradeArabia News Service
