The Center of Waste Management – Abu Dhabi has awarded contracts worth over Dh770 million ($210 million) to two companies for collection and transfer of waste, cleaning of streets, coasts and beaches in the emirate.

The new five-year contracts stipulate specified technical procedures that will play a vital role in reducing waste at source, maximizing recycling practices and decreasing waste transferred to landfills – which are key priorities for the centre, said a statement from CWM.

Alphamed – Lobbe – IFEU has been awarded the contract for the Lot 3 of Abu Dhabi, which includes the geographical areas of Abu Dhabi - Dubai borders in the north, as well as the Abu Dhabi - Al Ain borders in the west (from Abu Dhabi to Hamim street) and Abu Dhabi - Musafahborders in the east.

The contract also covers the areas between the two bridges andAbu Dhabi Gate. In the south, the scope runs from the Musafah bridge to Al Ain street and from the Tarif bridge to Hamaim street, ending at the Abu Dhabi - Al Ain borders, said the company in its statement.

West Coast – Saubermacher Environmental Services won the contract for cleaning services in the Lot 4 that spreads across the geographic areas of Hamimstreet ending at the borders of the UAE in Al Ghoayfat city. Its scope includes the Zayed City, Liwa, Ghayathi, farms in the western region (Al Debah, Tarief, Al Marfa, Al Dhanah Mountain, Al Sila, Sir BaniYas, Abu Al Abyad), in addition to the island’scoasts and beaches.

The contract’s scope of work includes the collection and transfer of waste,cleaning of streets,coasts and beaches and the separation of all recyclable waste, particularly green waste for reuseinthe production of fertilizers.

Acting GM Dr Salem Al Kaabi said these new contracts are in line with the CWM's plans to provide unmatched services to the community in Abu Dhabi. "It also complements our strategic objectives to maintain a sustainable environment through leveraging the practices of reuse and recycle," he added.

Mubarak Al Amri, the director of Waste Collection Projects, said: “The new contracts lay down revised conditions for the contracted companies, besides mandating additional services such as measuring operational performance to ensure that the international companies affiliated with local companies will fully oversee the project implementation and ensure that best practices are observed throughout the term of the contract."

“As part of the contract, Dalma Island, which falls in Lot 4, will witness the deployment of enhanced technologies given its status as a coveted natural reserve of Abu Dhabi,” he added.-TradeArabia News Service
