Bahrain to launch key road projects

Manama, September 15, 2013

Bahrain has lined up a number of major road projects, including a ring road in Muharraq and a new Alba interchange, which will be developed in the next 10 years, said a report citing top Ministry of works officials.

The plan is to create a new interchange near Alba similar to the one almost completed in Mina Salman, reported the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

Work is due to start soon on both the Alba road project and the Muharraq ring road, the report said.

"We have some major projects commencing within the coming months like the Alba interchange and the Muharraq interchange together with the Muharraq ring road," said Works Ministry roads special projects section chief Sayed Bader Ali.

"All these projects are going to be on the ground pretty soon. We mean business here."

He admitted that financing the multiple projects had been an issue, while identifying space for road projects in congested areas of Muharraq was another obstacle.

However, Ali said the projects should be underway by the middle of next year. "Alba interchange is next on the list and the Muharraq ring road will be starting at the same time," he said.

"We will also be focusing on access to the Northern Town. At the moment the design phase is in full swing and by the middle of next year we should start."

Ali explained that the Works Ministry has to prioritise projects and also consider the impact on drivers, as well as financial constraints.

"There is a whole list of projects and we have to look at them in terms of priority," he said. "Also, there is an issue with cash flow if we want to do all the projects at once. You just can't start all projects at once, or it will be chaos," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
