Saudi imports $200m worth of cement

Jeddah, August 21, 2014

Saudi Arabia has imported 3.1 million tonnes of cement worth SR750 million ($200 million) in the past nine months, said a report.

Data released by the Customs Department said that the rise in cement imports is due to the increased pace of project implementation and growing government spending on infrastructure projects, said the Arab News report.

The demand for cement is annually increasing at rates ranging from three to five per cent, a source in the national committee of cement companies at the Council of Saudi Chambers, was quoted as saying.

The production capacity of 15 operating cement plants in the kingdom has reached 60 million tonnes, but the companies are producing 55 million tonnes at the value of SR13 billion, he said.
