Bahrain mulls budget plan for women

Manama, February 26, 2008

The possibility of including a special budget in support of projects by women in the 2009-2010 budget is being considered, Finance Minister Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa has told Shura Council members.

He said that his ministry doesn't receive requests to fund projects based on gender, but only general budgets based on the needs of ministries and government organisations.

'Those ministries and government organisations can easily ask for special budgets for women, which we will be happy to meet, if it is possible,' said Shaikh Ahmed.

'We have signed an agreement with the Supreme Council for Women, like other ministry and establishments in Bahrain, and we are doing our best to ensure that women get the attention they deserve when budgets are drawn.'

The minister was responding to a question by council member Dr Nada Haffadh on whether women were taken into consideration when budgets are being drawn.-TradeArabia News Service
