Abu Dhabi, June 24, 2010

Winners of DuPont Bright Ideas Eco Challenge, a science-based competition for university students in the UAE, were honoured at an awards ceremony today (June 24).

DuPont, a leading market-driven science products and services company, hosted ceremony at the ALHOSN University, in Abu Dhabi.

The competition, which was open to all UAE undergraduate students, provided a unique opportunity to think creatively, and to develop innovative ideas that can contribute to long-term environmental protection.

The competition was launched in March and closed in June 2010. It attracted strong interest from the students and a high volume of entries from more than 50 universities and colleges in the UAE.

All submissions were evaluated by an expert judging panel of Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), one of the UAE’s leading environmental organizations; DuPont and ALHOSN University.

“We live our core values everyday and environmental stewardship is one of them. DuPont is committed to supporting sustainable growth through the development and implementation of programs and initiatives to sustain our environment, said Hartmut Reinke, director Middle East, Turkey and Africa, DuPont.

The team comprising Asma Malik, Farida Saif, Laura Kherbeck and Onoud Saleh from the American University of Sharjah took the first place, Reza Dashtpour from Heriott Watt University the second place and Danial Ahmed and Arsalan Muhammad Yousuf (also from the American University of Sharjah) landed the third place. The top three winners were honored at the ceremony. Each of the winners received a cash prize and a certificate.

Prof. Abdul Rahim Sabouni, Vice Chancellor and CEO, ALHOSN University added: “UAE students are more than capable of making positive contributions to environmental causes, as reflected by the high quality of the DuPont Bright Ideas Eco Challenge 2010 entries. They key is to provide them with platforms such as DBIEC competition to showcase their creativity, energy and commitment. We congratulate the winners for their hard work and their unique approaches to sustainability.”

“We need to start viewing young people more as vital partners in environmental stewardship.
