Nepal is preparing to lift a ban on domestic helpers working in the Gulf.

More than 100,000 women are believed to be employed in the region, including hundreds in Bahrain.

“We are preparing guidelines to lift the ban,” said second secretary of the Nepal
Embassy in Kuwait Pushpa Bhattrai, according to a report in the Himalayan Times.

Nepal banned domestic helpers from working in Gulf during the early 1990s for security reasons, but migration reportedly continued illegally.

The guidelines will make strong provision for workers’ safety, making recruiting
agencies accountable.

They say women should only be hired as domestic workers through the guarantee
of Nepali and Gulf-based outsourcing agencies, said Bhattrai.

They also call for mandatory training in housekeeping, familiarisation with the culture and basic communication skills in English.

It is understood the ban will be lifted once Nepal signs agreements with the destination countries.-TradeArabia News Service
