Four GEMS students win top CIE awards

Dubai, January 22, 2012

Four GEMS school students from the UAE won the top awards at the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), which recognise academic achievements of secondary school students across the world.

In the UAE the awards for the June 2011 Cambridge examinations (Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge International AS Level and Cambridge International A Level) are known as the Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cambridge Outstanding Learner Awards.

Cambridge IGCSE is the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 – 16 year olds.

GEMS students received a total of 30 Outstanding Learner awards which is a third of all award winners in the UAE.  GEMS students topped the UAE in 13 examination subjects.

“Since its launch 10 years ago here in the UAE, GEMS students have been recognised in the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards,” said William Bickerdike, regional manager, Mena and Pakistan, University of Cambridge International Examinations.

“These achievements are a credit to the partnership between GEMS and Cambridge and demonstrate the dedication and commitment of teachers, students and the schools. We look forward to congratulating more learners from GEMS Schools in the near future.”

“We are proud of our association with Cambridge International Examinations and salute the achievements of all our high performing students. Congratulations to them and their families. We believe in and support the achievement of excellence and these students are leading the way,” said Margaret Atack, GEMS Education spokesperson.

The Cambridge International School received the highest number of awards in the UAE with a total of 13 awards.

Since the inception of the Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Cambridge Outstanding Learner Awards in 2002, 442 awards have been given out, of which GEMS students have won 118. – TradeArabia News Service
