Tamkeen inks Asry training deal

Manama, March 24, 2012

Bahrain's labour fund Tamkeen said it has signed an agreement with Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company (Asry) to train and employ 50 Bahrainis in various technical disciplines at the shipbuilding firm.

The move is part of Tamkeen's ongoing efforts to develop national human capital in line with labour market demands.

Present at the signing ceremony were Tamkeen's chief executive Mahmood Al Kooheji and Asry representatives led by chief executive Chris Potter.

The agreement represents the latest addition to Tamkeen's Customised Employment Schemes, which is part of the Develop Workforce Intermediary Project through which Tamkeen helps local firms populate their labour requirements with Bahrainis by providing training combined with wage subsidies.

As per the agreement, Tamkeen will contribute up to 48 per cent or BD480,000 ($1.3 million) of the total programme cost, covering the training cost and incentives paid during the training only.

The training will be rolled out over a period of two to three years, with training outcome split into two levels depending on the applicants' qualifications.

The programme will include a mixture of academic training and on the job training at Asry leading to a professional diploma qualification in various disciplines within the shipping industry.

This will be followed by an employment opportunity in Asry after the completion of the programme.

'Tamkeen is continuing to address the needs of the private sector while creating sustainable job opportunities for Bahrainis,' Mr Al Kooheji said.

'The shipping industry is among the burgeoning sectors which provide ample value-added employment opportunities for Bahraini talent, and we are confident that this partnership will benefit both sides of the equation in the long run,' he added.

'We are pleased about this partnership, which confirms Asry's growing role in supporting the national economy through providing training and career opportunities for Bahrainis in various disciplines within the shipping industry,' Mr Potter said.

'This also comes in line with our mission to enhance the kingdom's leading position in the shipbuilding and repair industry through the Dry Dock,' he added.

The academic training courses will be delivered by National Institute of Industrial Training (NIIT), providing custom-made courses aiming to meet the specific requirements of the Employment and Training programme.

This include: electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and fabrication and welding. Unemployed Bahrainis, and holders of secondary (technical) high school certificates or holders of Engineering Diploma are encouraged to apply for the programme by contacting Tamkeen or through NIIT.-TradeArabia News Service
