Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation chaired by Saudi billionaire prince Alwaleed has signed an MoU with The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) to help improve the basic education in Yemen.

Under the agreement signed with Dr Ibrahim El-Ziq, the Unicef representative to the Gulf Area, the Alwaleed Foundation will donate $250,000 to 15 schools in Aden, Abyan and Hodeidah provinces.

The Foundation, which is registered in Lebanon, works for children's rights, their survival, development and protection.

The money will be used to refurbish classrooms and provide child-friendly spaces within a safe and healthy infrastructure besides providing training to teachers and ensuring child and gender equality.

“Alwaleed Foundations are committed to supporting humanitarian initiatives that invest in education for communities, especially children, for long term growth and sustained development in less fortunate societies around the world,” said Prince Alwaleed.

“Arab countries are always a priority,” he added.

As per the one-year agreement, the targeted schools will be become more child friendly, with new educational policies at local and national levels.

Educational programs aimed at the local community and religious leaders will be implemented along with better training for teachers and supervisors.

Role committees for teachers and parents will be established or strengthened, while activities to change behavior and encourage good health and hygiene will be introduced, said Dr El-Ziq.

"In addition, schools will also benefit from technical and field support, which includes monitoring and evaluation," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
