Bahrain steps up fight against child abuse

Manama, June 7, 2013

Bahrain has stepped up efforts to protect children against all forms of violence and abuse, a report said.

A hotline will operate round-the-clock to receive complaints and take necessary measures, according to a report in the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

The 998 hotline was launched as part of efforts to ensure protection for children.

Social Development Minister Dr Fatima Al Balooshi yesterday announced the drive as she visited the Child Protection Centre, Manama.

"Every child in Bahrain should have a card featuring the rescue hotline 998," she said. The hotline number is being distributed at malls, schools and other venues.

The minister was updated on procedures and the follow-up of cases of violence and abuse against children. "Our aim is to reach all children, enhance their awareness regarding their legal rights," she said.

She stressed the importance of promoting co-operation with ministries of health, education, justice and other parties.

She called for the professional development of the centre staff and upgrading the child rescue hotline procedures. She also gave directives to conduct a field study to survey the cases of violence and abuse against children.

The aim is to establish indices and explore solutions in compliance with the law on child protection. The ministry is also planning to step up the alternative care programme and train families desiring to join the scheme.

The programme will benefit vulnerable children living in dysfunctional families to spare them trauma and ensure them proper care. – TradeArabia News Service
