Experts to discuss new osteoporosis research

Damascus, April 20, 2010

Arab and international experts will discuss latest research on osteoporosis at the largest bone health convention in the region in Damascus later this month.

The 5th Pan Arab Osteoporosis Congress, taking place from April 28 to 30, is organized by the Pan Arab Osteoporosis Society (PAOS) in collaboration with the International Osteoporosis Foundation, and with the support of Nestlé Middle East as part of their “Nestlé Strong and Healthy Bones” initiative.

“Osteoporosis is one of the most disabling conditions of older adults and the elderly. It represents an immense human, social and economic burden,” said Dr Gemma Adib, president of PAOS and congress president.

“Osteoporosis is a global problem, but according to latest studies Asia is the region where the increase in osteoporosis fractures will be the greatest. Specialists in this field need to continue working closely to pool data and share expertise, an objective which we hope our congress will contribute to achieving, with a view to actively stop the alarming spread of bone disease in our region.”

Supported by leading pharmaceutical companies, the fifth edition of the PAOS Congress will once again host the field’s most renowned experts from the region as well as from around the world, to share and discuss the latest data on basic and clinical osteoporosis research including new development in bone cell biology, epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment.  In addition to the rich scientific program, the congress will feature important public sessions highlighting the role of nutrition and exercise in preventing osteoporosis.

“We are strongly committed to promoting bone health in the region, in cooperation with experts in the field,” said Karine Antoniades Turk, nutritionist, Nestlé Middle East. “Through the ‘Nestlé Strong and Healthy Bones Initiative’, we put our broad resources and nutritional expertise in the service of the public at large. Our aim is to help increase awareness as to the role of the right nutrition and physical activity in building and maintaining strong and healthy bones; crucial for osteoporosis prevention.”

A host of renowned international experts will  be presenting their views and latest studies during the congress, including: Prof John Kanis, president of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF); Prof René Rizzoli, University Hospitals of Geneva; Prof Serge Ferrari, University Hospital and Faculty of Medicine Geneva; Prof Peter Burkhardt, Swiss Association Against Osteoporosis; Prof Christian Roux, Evaluation Center for Bone Disease Paris; Prof Jean-Yves Reginster, University of Liege Belgium; Prof Abdul A Samra, Wayne State University School of Medicine USA; and Prof Bess Dawson Hughes, IOF general secretary. – TradeArabia News Service
