Bahrainis and residents have been urged by a senior official to conserve water and energy resources before they become scarce .

The country's dry climate has resulted in the supply of resources through complex and comprehensive systems of production, storage and distribution, said Hidd Power Company (HPC) executive managing director Andy Biffen.

He was speaking on the occasion of World Water Day, which falls today.

"Each gallon of clean water we consume carries with it an environmental impact which we all need to take some responsibility for," he said.

"Unless we continue to preserve and manage our energy and water consumption, the future availability of this valuable resource cannot be guaranteed."

The HPC supplies 66 per cent of Bahrain's clean water needs and produces up to 90 million gallons of clean water per day.

"Being a thermal plant, such a large volume of water production requires a considerable amount of heat energy and in our case, this comes from waste heat from the power plant, plus additional natural gas burnt in large boilers," he said.

World Water Day has been observed on this day since 1993, when the UN General Assembly first declared it.

A large number of non-government organisations promoting clean water and sustainable aquatic habitats have used this day to focus public attention on the critical water issues. – TradeArabia News Service
