Dubai Food Code 'to boost public health'

Dubai, April 4, 2013

The new Food Code launched by the Dubai Municipality has been hailed by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) as a “significant boost to public health.”

Dubai Municipality recently released a new Food Code with the express aim of developing a world-class food safety system.

This important public health initiative is part of a series of robust measures the municipality has taken over the past couple of years to promote and encourage the highest standards food safety and hygiene for its growing population and its rapidly expanding tourist trade.

In 2010, the municipality introduced a Person in Charge (PIC) programme, making it mandatory for Dubai’s 13,000 food establishments to appoint at least one individual trained and certified in food safety.

CIEH is one of the world’s leading providers of food safety and health and safety training.

Frank Post, CIEH director of commercial services, said: "The new Food Code will further strengthen Dubai’s position as a model of best practice, whose number one priority is the health and wellbeing of all its residents and visitors.

“Since 2010, the CIEH has been working with the Dubai Municipality, local trainers and businesses to improve food safety standards in Dubai. This is an extremely dynamic part of the world and we believe that our market-leading knowledge combined with our world-renowned training programmes are uniquely positioned to make an ongoing positive contribution to public health in Dubai," he said.

“The CIEH’s PIC qualifications are approved and accredited by the Dubai Municipality and Dubai Accreditation Centre. In addition to our PIC qualifications we have introduced a CIEH PIC Food Safety System Pack, allowing food businesses to efficiently and effectively document the management of food safety risks to prove risks are being proactively managed (based on the HACCP system)," he said.  - TradeArabia News Service
