UAE cuts prices by 40pc for 6,600 medicines

Dubai, June 6, 2013

UAE is cutting the prices of 6,610 medicines by up to 40 per cent from tomorrow (June 6) under a new unified pricing scheme, a report said.

Medications are for chronic high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes form the majority in the list of reduced drugs, said the report in the Gulf News.

This will make the UAE the country with the lowest priced medicines in the GCC.

Prior to the unified scheme, a study on medicine prices in Jordan, Bahrain, Oman, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the UAE showed that 5,000 medications in the UAE were costlier by up to 44 per cent due to the currency exchange, the report said.

“After the implementation, 60 per cent of the medicines in the UAE will be priced the lowest among the GCC countries despite the growing economy of the country,” Dr Ameen Hussain Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Medical Practices and Licensing, was quoted as saying in the report.
