A national plan to combat marine pollution in Bahrain was yesterday approved by the Cabinet.

It aims to achieve a speedy, effective and co-ordinated response to pollution caused by oil leaks, harmful biological materials or hazardous chemicals, among others, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

The details were revealed by Minister of State for Information Affairs Sameera Rajab during a press conference held yesterday after the weekly Cabinet session at Gudaibiya Palace.

“We are planning to establish an expertise centre for immediate response to combat any oil spills or harmful substances,” said Rajab, who is also the official government spokeswoman.

“Training for personnel, in the field of oil or biological weapons, will also be provided.

“We are also planning to carry effectiveness of the plan.

“The government has plans to buy or rent the equipment needed to combat oil spills or other harmful substances.”

The Supreme Council for Environment, in collaboration with the Marine Emergency Mutual Aid Centre and other authorities concerned, supervised the preparation of the plan. - TradeArabia News Service
