Dewa to host Green Week initiative

Dubai, April 1, 2014

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) is set to host its first Green Week event to raise awareness on the rational consumption of electricity and water this month.

The inaugural Green Week, which will take place from April 14 to 20, will coincide with leading environmentally-focused events including the the 16th Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (Wetex 2014), the World Green Economy Summit 2014 and the launch of SmarTech Shopper, which targets consumers.

The Green Week initiative forms part of Dewa’s campaign to spread a culture of sustainability and green solutions among different segments of society.

The authority will organise a series of activities and educational programmes to highlight sustainability solutions and demonstrate the optimal methods of rationalising the consumption of energy resources.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, vice chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, and managing director and CEO of Dewa, said: “The main objective of Green Week is to promote a culture of environment sustainability among all members of the community and urge them to take action to protect the environment.

“The event, to be held annually, will feature major environmentally-focused events in Dubai while promoting best green practices to achieve the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative, in addition to creating a sustainable environment that would support long-term economic growth.”

The activities for Green Week include a series of social, education and entertainment activities, including workshops, and presentations to raise awareness about the conservation of electricity and water.

Dewa will launch the Green Ribbon sustainability pledge campaign to disseminate a culture of conservation. The campaign will raise awareness on best conservation practices. The activities will support the reduction of electricity and water production, as well as cut down on carbon dioxide emissions.

The ‘Ambassadors of Sustainability,’ a part of Dubai Municipality, will showcase sustainable solutions and projects, besides Dewa engineers who will give explanations on conservation programmes.

The activities will move to Mirdif City Centre on April 17, and continue for three days, featuring an art exhibition offering drawings and paintings on rational consumption and sustainability.

There will also be graphics on conservation of water and electricity and its social impact.

The exhibition is expected to draw a large number of visitors. Dewa has also launched a special competition for Green Week over Instragram and other social media sites to send photos related to conservation and sustainability. Dewa will re-publish the best photos through Instragram and the best three photos will win a camera. - TradeArabia News Service
