MEPC to focus on current challenges

Manama, May 26, 2008

Major issues such as high capital costs and feedstock availability will be the focal points of discussion at the seventh annual Middle East Petrochemicals Conference (MEPC) in Bahrain.

The event takes place from June 15 to 17 June, 2008 at the Sheraton Bahrain Hotel, Bahrain.

Organised by MEED, the business intelligence expert, and sponsored by British Offset, MEPC will analyse the current challenges facing the market whilst developing distribution strategies and offering key networking opportunities.

The outstanding speaker panel at the conference will include:Moayyed Al-Qurtas, CEO,  Tasnee Petrochemicals; Ahmad Al-Gatai, general manager, Shared Management Organisation, Sabic; Mohammad Hadi Rahbari, chairman and managing director, National Petrochemical Company International (NPC); Sami Iskandrani, general manager, Petrorabigh; and Abdulla Saif S. Al-Mesallam, group manager, finance, Qatar Petrochemicals.

Looking forward to 2011, the Middle East is expected to control more than 40 per cent of all global petrochemical capacity.  The petrochemicals industry, the leading manufacturing sector in the region is estimated by MEED to have $128bn worth of projects currently under construction or in the planning stages.

The conference will act as a melting pot for discussion as Gulf governments look to diversify the sector whilst ensuring long-term sustainable success.

“The Middle East has the opportunity to change the face of the petrochemical industry with significant growth and development planned for the next three years.  The industry is aware of the challenges facing the market and MEED’s Middle East Petrochemicals 2008 conference gives the industry experts and regional decision-makers an opportunity to come together to develop strategies and plan for a sustainable future,” said Gulf Bureau Chief for MEED Ed James.

In addition to two days of keynote speeches and panel discussions, the conference will offer two pre-conference workshops exploring how organisations can be adapted to make the most out of new opportunities and maximise the efficiencies in supply chains.
