Logistics zone plots set for allotment

Manama, September 21, 2008

The new Bahrain Logistics Zone (BLZ) Project has attracted overwhelming response from local and international applicants requesting land space in the zone.

The selection committee formed to screen and evaluate the applications will announce the names of successful applicants very soon.

The issue came up for discussion at the board meeting of the General Organisation of Sea Ports (GOP). Board chairman Shaikh Daij bin Salman Al Khalifa chaired the meeting.

Shaikh Daij observed 'The BLZ project will stimulate foreign direct investment into Bahrain, create a large number of jobs, and serve as a catalyst for the growth of the logistics industry in Bahrain.'

The board reviewed the recent developments with regard to the BLZ project. The board reviewed the selection and screening process of the applications.

The process was found fair to all the applicants, impartial and transparent. The criteria followed for screening process was also explained which ensured that local and international businesses were allocated plots in the Zone.

The board also reviewed the progress of the Khalifa bin Salman Port (KBSP) Project including the progress with regard to the erection of the buildings and infrastructure. The board directed the GOP management to closely monitor the progress of the project to ensure that construction is completed on time.

The board also discussed the issue of dredging the Bahrain Main Channel, which leads to KBSP. The move is aimed at dredging the channel to a sufficient depth to cater large vessels that are expected to arrive in KBSP.

This will serve the aim of turning the kingdom into a major transshipment hub for the upper Gulf region. The channel will also serve the rest of Bahrain ports and would have a positive impact on the shipping industry as a whole.

The board also discussed half-year financial statement of the GOP.-TradeArabia News Service
