Gulf Energy Maritime (GEM), the Middle East's largest independent commercial product tanker operator, has taken delivery of the second of two tankers expected this year from Korea's Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD), one of the world’s largest ship makers.

Named Gulf Jumeirah, the $56 million tanker would be the 11th vessel in Gem’s growing fleet and is expected to strengthen the company’s status as the region’s top chemical transportation company.
 
“Once again, Gulf Energy Maritime has taken delivery of a high quality vessel which follows the highest standards of safety, something we have consistently adhered to in all our previous ships,” said Ahmed Essa Hareb Al Falahi, CEO, Gem.
 
“The specifications of all our newbuilding orders are reflective of our commitment and dedication towards achieving sound business practices and profitability whilst ensuring that all safety and quality standards, both for the benefit of the environment and for our crew, are strictly given top priority.”

Gem’s adherence to safety, quality and security has been acknowledged and recognized by the shipping fraternity through the three awards it received this year alone.

Seatrade Middle East and Indian Subcontinent Awards awarded Gem in the Safety and Quality category, while Lloyd’s Middle East Shipping Awards recognized Gem in the Clean Seas category, and bestowed the company with the Tanker Company of the Year award.

“Just like Gulf Baynunah delivered in October this year, Gulf Jumeirah is an IMO II N2 type, 47,000 dwt Oil/Chemical Tanker,” said Al Falahi.
 
“In order to balance our business strategy and address ongoing market trends, Gulf Jumeirah is set to cater to and respond to the demands of the spot market,” he added.

Six more vessels are on order by Gem from HMD, all of which are scheduled for delivery in 2009. Two of these vessels are of 47,000 dwt, while the other four are much bigger at 75,000 dwt.

As such, by 2009, Gem will surely become one of the region’s largest provider of safe and reliable tankers.
