Emal celebrates LTI safety milestone

Emirates Aluminium Company (Emal), a hitech aluminium smelter complex based in the UAE, said it has achieved a safety milestone with a record 25 million safe work hours without a single Lost Time Incident (LTI) in April in the Phase II project implementation.

This was achieved just nine months after celebrating the milestone safety achievement of 10 million work-hours with zero LTI.

With a current site population of over 12,000 project workers and their management representatives workers, the impressive Phase II occasion was marked by a formal on-site ceremony in the presence of Emal president and CEO Saeed Fadhel Al Mazrooei.

He was joined on stage by Arif Lalani, the Canadian Ambassador to the UAE and Neil Bruce, the president of Montréal-based company SNC-Lavalin Resources Environment and Water Division.

Commenting on the achievement, Al Mazrooei said: "Excellence in all we undertake is evident by the relentless consistency in performance by our employees and contractors alike, reflecting the common values, co-operation and sound project management."

"It is these common values that have ensured Phase II maintains an impeccable safety record, whilst reaching expansion milestones on plan, on schedule and within budget.The feats so far will encourage and drive us forward as we continue to safely and responsibly accomplish the ambitious goals we have set for ourselves," he added.
 
Testament to the constantly evolving Emal culture of “Safety first, last and always” cultivated since the landmark industrial diversification project’sinception, the ceremony included the UAE company’s quarterly environmental health and safety awards for the top three best performing contactors.

Along with award winning contractor representatives from William Hare (UAE), Alucore and ELC-SAS, were the members of Emal Phase ll Project Team led by VP Projects Yousuf Bastaki.

Addressing SNC-Lavalin’s part in the accomplishment, Arif Lalani said, "Emal is a great Emirates success story. It is a crucial piece in the country's economic diversification strategy. I am proud that Canadians and Canadian entities have been part of the financing, engineering, and management of this strategic project."

Yousuf Bastaki pointed out that Emal continued to set a world class safety record.

"We are proud to witness that Emal’s steadfast commitment to our core value of “Safety first, last, and always” is equally shared by all parties involved in the project, ensuring the safe and cooperative Phase II construction continues to set new standards of EHS excellence," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
