UAE women entrepreneurs set for growth

Abu Dhabi, December 19, 2013

The number of female entrepreneurs in the UAE is likely to grow over the years, said a study, eventhough men are currently 2.8 times more likely to start-up a business than them.

Booz & Company’s ‘Empowering the Third Billion’ report showed that closing the gender gap in the UAE labour market by just half could increase the annual GDP growth rate by seven per cent.

The SME Congress and Expo, which was held recently in Abu Dhabi, had dedicated an entire day to women in business.

Speakers addressed the challenges that face female business owners and offered solutions to help women entrepreneurs bridge the gender gap in the economy.

Major sessions were focused on the rise of women in business in the GCC and succeeding in a male-dominant environment.

Interestingly, the Booz report said that although Emirati women on average worked 5.6 hours per week more than men, only 8.6 per cent of the UAE’s millionaires were female.

However, global trends showed that now over a third of all global firms have women owners, according to International Financial Corporation (IFC).

The inaugural conference also offered SME business owners and entrepreneurs an opportunity to learn from experts, network with colleagues and suppliers and find out how best to develop their businesses. - TradeArabia News Service
